Autoridades aclaran que no estamos en alerta sanitaria por meningitis amebiana

Aguas termales son seguras sin sumergir la cabeza

20 de febrero de 2020. Las autoridades del Ministerio de Salud aclaran que el país no se encuentra en alerta sanitaria ante los casos de meningitis amebiana detectados en las últimas semanas. Las aguas termales naturales conllevan beneficios siempre y cuando se disfruten de manera responsable siguiendo las medidas de prevención recomendadas por el Ministerio de Salud.

“Una persona puede hacer uso de las aguas termales sin ninguna afectación siempre y cuando no sumerja la cabeza en el agua. Introducir la cabeza en el agua facilita el ingreso por vía nasal del microorganismo causante de meningitis amebiana. Por ello el Ministerio de Salud pide a los usuarios de aguas termales mantener en todo momento su cabeza fuera de las aguas termales naturales y vigilar a los menores de edad para cumplir esta instrucción”, dijo Daniel Salas, Ministro de Salud.

“Coincidimos en que no estamos frente a ningún tipo de alerta que impida la visitación de las aguas termales, sino ante la necesidad de incrementar medidas preventivas para disfrutarlas de forma segura y responsable. Reiteramos el compromiso que tiene el sector con la seguridad de sus turistas, por ese motivo, apoyaremos educando a nuestros visitantes y colaboraremos en la construcción de una regulación específica para las piscinas de aguas termales naturales”, manifestó la directora de Canatur, Shirley Calvo.

La meningitis amebiana la produce la ameba Naegleria fowleri. El microorganismo comúnmente está presente en los cuerpos de aguas dulces templadas de cualquier parte del mundo (lagos, ríos y fuentes naturales de aguas termales). La enfermedad es muy poco frecuente, estudios científicos determinaron que afecta a una por cada 2.5 millones de personas.

“El ICT insta a los establecimientos que poseen aguas termales a seguir las recomendaciones sanitarias y medidas preventivas emitidas por el Ministerio de Salud”, expresó María Amalia Revelo, Ministra de Turismo.

“Como lo hemos venido haciendo en los últimos años, desde el Instituto continuaremos ofreciendo capacitación a los empresarios del nicho turístico de bienestar y de termalismo con expertos nacionales e internacionales para el mejoramiento y seguridad de este producto con enorme potencial”, agregó la jerarca.

Health Officials Affirm that There is No Amoebic Meningitis Health Alert

Hot springs are safe if you keep your head out of the water

20 February 2020 - Officials from the Ministry of Health explained that no health alert has been issued in Costa Rica due to the cases of amoebic meningitis identified during the last few weeks. Natural hot springs are beneficial when enjoyed responsibly, following the safety guidelines of the Ministry of Health.

“People can enjoy the hot springs without any issues; they just should keep their head out of the water. Dipping one’s head under the water makes it easier for the microorganism that causes amoebic meningitis to enter the nostrils. The Ministry of Health asks that users of the hot springs keep their heads above water whenever they are in the hot springs, and that they keep an eye on children to make sure they follow that guideline”, said Daniel Salas, the Minister of Health.

The director of Canatur, Shirley Calvo, stated that, “we concur that there is no alert of any kind that should keep people from visiting the hot springs, and that is necessary to enhance our safety measures in order to make sure they are enjoyed safely and responsibly. We reaffirm the industry’s commitment to the safety of our tourists, and support educating our visitors and working together to develop specific regulations for using pools fed by natural hot spring sources.”

Amoebic meningitis is caused by the Naegleria fowleri amoeba, a microorganism that is common in warm fresh water bodies around the world (such as lakes, rivers, and natural sources of thermal waters). The disease is extremely infrequent. Scientific studies have determined that only one out of 2.5 million people get affected.

“The Costa Rican Tourism Institute urges facilities that have thermal waters to follow the health and safety recommendations and measures issued by the Ministry of Health,” said María Amalia Revelo, the Minister of Tourism.

She added, “as we have done in recent years, the Institute will continue to offer training led by national and international experts to tourism entrepreneurs involved in the wellbeing and thermal niches, in order to ensure the ongoing improvement and safety of this tourism product, which has enormous potential.”
